NETGEAR's Rangemax 240 looks smart enough to grace the most stylish home…It has all the standard security features we expect these days, like NAT routing, a hardware firewall, WEP and WPA. Corporates will also appreciate WPA2 and parents will like the keyword blocking. Setting up via the web interface is simple thanks to the layout and side-bar help instructions. There's a wizard to take you through connecting to the Internet and the manual options are easily accessible...

Verdict: Recommended -- A List. The fastest wireless router we've seen. It dramatically boosts the range of standard 802.11g networks.

WPNT834 RangeMax 240 Wireless Router WPNT834 RangeMax 240 Wireless Router
"While early model wireless network devices rarely lived up to expectations, the latest generation of MIMO-compatible hardware is rapidly closing the performance gap between wireless and wired networking. This NETGEAR device is capable of communication at around the same speed of 100-base wired Ethernet, though this is still dependent on range. In testing with a RangeMax 240 wireless notebook adapter (WPNT511), the hardware managed a staggering 96.2Mbit/s at a range of 3m, smashing all previous lab records. It even managed to boost the performance of 802.11g hardware due to its increased sensitivity over 802.11g routers. ...All up, the RangeMax 240 offers outstanding performance for short-range networking, coupled with solid security and an excellent setup wizard."

Verdict: Editor's Choice. Blistering performance, excellent setup and security.

"NETGEAR's wireless router is a bulbous white box with three antennae at the rear…WEP (64- and 128-bit), WPA pre-shared key and WPA2 pre-shared key security protocols are available for this device, with the added option of selecting automatically between WPA and the newer WPA2 according to the capabilities of the computer linking to the WLAN…Throughput testings gave some excellent results -- particularly at closer range…throughputs of 51Mbps were recorded -- easily the highest recorded for any device tested.

The overwhelming issue most integrators have when setting up a wireless network solution is that most vendors only excel in one aspect of the total solution. Whether it is on the hardware, software or service side, many integrators say the major wireless vendors are lacking in at least one area.
Netgear recently launched a product line that promises to make up for these shortcomings and provide full wireless networking solutions for SMBs.
The company’s ProSafe 24 Port 10/100 Layer 3 Managed Switch (FSM7326P) and ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point (WG302) give integrators the tools necessary to satisfy the needs of SMBs while at the same time providing the path for a migration to a larger installed base.
